Churches Together in Romsey

Romsey Quakers come together with members of the Church of England, United Reformed Church, Freedom church, Elim Pentecostal, Catholics, Baptists and Methodists to create the space in which fruitful collaboration and mutual understanding can grow.

Each year in the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity there are joint prayer meetings and a united Sunday evening service. The churches organise united meetings or house groups during Lent and an Act of Witness in the town centre on Good Friday.

Many members of the churches are involved with Oasis, an interdenominational Trust which opened in 1984. The Oasis Christian Centre shop in Church Street sells books, CDs, greeting cards, and Fair Trade goods.

Romsey Churches leaders including a representative from Romsey Quakers meet monthly to discuss matters of common interest in a relaxed and informal way.

"Receptive ecumenism has the potential to transform how we listen and relate."

Receptive ecumenism is essentially very simple. Instead of asking what other Church traditions need to learn from us, we ask what our tradition needs to learn from them – what we can receive which is of God? If each of our church traditions were to ask this question and act upon it, the hope is that we would draw closer together, while also deepening our own respective identities.

Receptive ecumenism has the potential to transform how we listen and relate as churches – learning from each other and recognising that we all have gifts to share.  It challenges us to not think of what others might benefit from receiving from us, but instead invites us to recognise our needs and to put ourselves in the place of being a recipient.
